Ready to discover the heart of campus life? The Donald P. & Katherine B. Loker Student Union stands before you. It is more than just a building. It is the center and soul of California State University, Dominguez Hills.
This union wasn’t built overnight. Students voted for it in a referendum. Fees were collected beginning in 1985. A fundraising campaign called FutureNow helped a lot. Donald P. and Katherine B. Loker supported the project. Their passion made this union a reality.
In 1989, the ground broke and construction began. After three years, the Donald P. & Katherine B Loker University Student Union opened. The two-story building covered approximately 67,000 sq ft. Louis Anderson was the first LSU Director.
But the story doesn’t end there. A fire damaged the University Bookstore in 2004. This led to a renovation and expansion project. The building nearly doubled in size to 121,042 sq ft. Katherine B. Loker contributed $4 million to the $34.3 million expansion.
In 2007, the Loker Student Union reopened. The facade became a university landmark. It is easily seen from Victoria Street. The building’s design earned an award from the Association of College Unions International.
Step inside the Loker Student Union. You’ll find many things. There is the University Bookstore. Campus Dining offers various choices. You can also find Associated Students, Inc. and the Office of Student Life. Several resource centers call this place home. These include the Rose Black Resource Center and the Latinx Cultural Resource Center. The Queer Culture Resource Center is here as well.
The Loker Student Union offers many services. You can buy discounted amusement park tickets. You can also reserve event spaces. Wireless printing is available. Need a charge? You can charge your phone or tablet here. Grab a bite in the food court. Visit the DH Sports Lounge.
The 120,000-square-foot facility has many rooms. There’s a games room for recreation. You can find a meditation room for quiet reflection. A nap room offers rest.
The building has a ballroom. It seats 500 for banquets. It can hold 1,000 for lectures. The building was designed with sustainability in mind. It uses natural lighting. This reduces dependence on artificial lights. Much of the existing infrastructure was reused.
The Loker Student Union creates a sense of community. It expands educational avenues. It enhances daily life for students, alumni, faculty, staff, and guests.
