Lost in time yet vibrant today sits Loissin. Have you ever imagined a place that started as a Slavic settlement? Loissin began as Lodizin around 1248. The name means “kahn” or “ship”.
Duke Wartislaw III of Pommern confirmed Loissin’s inclusion within the holdings of Eldena Abbey. The village then became property of the Bishop of Cammin. But in 1240 the town of Greifswald bought it. Greifswald then exchanged Loissin with Eldena Abbey.
After secularization the monastic holdings went to the Dukes of Pommern. The administration was managed by Amt Eldena. In 1634 the last Duke Bogislaw XIV gifted Loissin to the University of Greifswald.
In 1810 the merchant Weissenborn from Greifswald acquired Loissin. He also purchased neighboring Ludwigsburg. The Loissin manor house was constructed in the latter half of the 19th century. After 1945 it served as a residence. It was also a kindergarten and a community nurse station.
During the DDR era Loissin hosted the LPG Helles Ufer. This was an agricultural production cooperative. Today the core village retains its agricultural character. North of the village center a large leisure complex arose. This was during the DDR times. It sits directly on the Bodden coast. It included a bungalow settlement and a large campsite.
After 1990 extensive modernization and expansion took place in Loissin. Infrastructure essential for tourism was added. This transformation established Loissin and its core village. It became a significant tourist center in the area.
Loissin is made up of three subdivisions. Besides Loissin these are Gahlkow and Ludwigsburg. Each has its own story to tell. Gahlkow was first mentioned in 1248 as Golkogh. Its current spelling appeared in 1648. The Slavic name means “bare” or “naked”. In 1299 Duke Bogislaw IV transferred Gahlkow to Eldena Abbey.
Ludwigsburg has traces of Neolithic settlements. These date back to 4500 to 1700 BC. A Bronze Age burial ground suggests Germanic settlement. Ludwigsburg was first documented as Darsinus in 1184. In 1207 it was included in the general endowment for Eldena Abbey. Darsim is Slavic for “wild forest” or “projecting land”.
Loissin a municipality in Vorpommern-Greifswald. It is managed by the Lubmin office. This office is based in the seaside resort of Lubmin. Loissin lies between Greifswald and Lubmin. It sits on the Baltic Sea coast. It is near Dänische Wiek and the Greifswald Bodden. Greifswald is about 15 kilometers west of Loissin. Lubmin is six kilometers east. As of 2023 Loissin has 806 residents. The mayor is Detlef Sadewasser.
Though Loissin lacks an officially approved coat of arms. Its official seal features the coat of arms of Vorpommern. It depicts an upright griffin. The inscription reads “GEMEINDE LOISSIN”.
