Sixty-four years. That’s how long Locust Manor Playground has stood in Springfield Gardens. Imagine the countless games played here. The laughter. The tears.

Locust Manor Playground opened in May 1954. It was the 604th playground in the New York City Parks system. It serves the students of P.S. 15 and the neighborhood residents. Its name comes from the nearby Long Island Rail Road station. That station itself reflects a much older history. Locust Manor first appeared in 1906 as the name of a local development project.

The playground’s history is interwoven with the history of Springfield Gardens. This area was once called “Spring Fields”. Dutch settlers arrived in the 1640s drawn by the ponds and creeks. By 1700 Spring Fields was a small farming community. Settlers created an irrigation system using local water sources. This system later became part of larger county systems. Eventually pollution ruined those lovely ponds.

The Long Island Rail Road’s arrival in the early 1900s changed everything. Real estate boomed. New homes and streets were built. The population grew from a few thousand to fifteen thousand by the late 1930s. Many of these new residents came from Brooklyn. The Post Office officially renamed the area Springfield Gardens in 1927.

Locust Manor Playground itself underwent a renovation in 2002. Today you can find a basketball court. There are two handball courts. A children’s play area has swings and checker tables. A spray shower and comfort station are also available. Generations of children have run played and grown here at Locust Manor Playground. Their memories are woven into the very fabric of this place. Come. Explore the playground. Experience its history. Discover the joy it brings.
