What makes Lobão, Gião, Louredo e Guisande unique in Portugal? It’s one of the few parishes with a surprising feature. It’s territorially discontinuous. Imagine two separate pieces of land, miles apart, both belonging to the same parish! This unusual situation is a legacy of the former parish of Louredo, which had the same geographical quirk. Now, Lobão, Gião, Louredo e Guisande, established in 2013, inherited this unusual layout. The larger section holds most of the parish’s territory, about 85%. This section includes the former parishes of Lobão, Gião, Guisande, and part of Louredo. The smaller section, much further east, is a small exclave surrounding the village of Parada. To reach Parada from the main part of Lobão, Gião, Louredo e Guisande, you’d have to travel through the neighboring parish of Canedo, Vale e Vila Maior. It’s a testament to the enduring power of history and geography in shaping communities, even in the 21st century.
