“Why Livonia Playground?” I asked myself the first time I saw the sign. The name Livonia echoes a history far removed from this Brooklyn neighborhood.

Livonia Playground is more than just swings and slides. It is a connection to a past stretching across continents. It is a place where local children create new stories every day.

Let’s uncover the story behind the name Livonia. It links back to a historical Baltic province encompassing parts of present-day Latvia and Estonia. This region was named after its indigenous people. They were called the Livs.

Livonia’s story is one of shifting powers. Teutonic Knights, Sweden and the Russian Empire ruled it. The Livs faced persecution. They gradually assimilated into the Latvian population.

So, how did Livonia lend its name to a playground in Brooklyn? When Livonia Avenue was first laid out in the town of New Lots in the late 19th Century, it was named for the Linningtons. They were a local farming family. Later the name was changed to honor the Finnish-Polish-Russian province.

This area of Brooklyn, once a Jewish neighborhood, now reflects a vibrant mix of cultures. The name Livonia serves as a reminder of the area’s diverse roots.

Around Livonia Playground, history whispers from every corner. Just north of Livonia Playground, Betsy Head Park features an Imagination Playground. It boasts an elevated walkway reminiscent of treehouses and the nearby elevated subway line.

Not far from here, on Pennsylvania Avenue, a faded mural promotes Fortunoff’s. This upscale department store had humble beginnings. In 1922, Max and Clara Fortunoff opened a household goods store on Livonia Avenue under the El tracks.

Today, Livonia Playground stands as a testament to community and play. While the name connects us to distant lands, the laughter and energy of children here create a vibrant present.

Consider the park’s red and white paving bricks. They evoke the Latvian flag, adding another layer to the Livonian connection. A tribute that has been there since the 1960s.

As you watch the children play, remember the layers of history beneath your feet. From local farming families to Baltic provinces. From department stores to modern playgrounds. Livonia Playground embodies the ever-evolving story of New York City.
