Little Zion Baptist Church

A beacon of faith in Kenner, the Little Zion Baptist Church has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the years. Little Zion Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It began humbly in 1883. A small group of devoted Christians sought a place to worship together. They established Zion Chapel Baptist Church on Johnstown Road. After three years of renting, they acquired the present site of Little Zion Baptist Church on December 29, 1886. As the congregation grew, the name evolved. In the early 1900s, it became Little Zion Baptist Church, reflecting its expanding presence and influence. The founders, including Deacon Jesse Saunders, William Brooks, Casper Tillery, African Walke, and John Dozier, laid the groundwork for a thriving community. The church flourished under the leadership of numerous pastors, each contributing to its rich history. From Reverend Jacob Gaskins, the first pastor, to Reverend Johnny Henderson, the church has been guided by dedicated spiritual leaders. The church building underwent various improvements over time. Stained glass windows and a new sidewalk enhanced its appearance. The men of the church maintained the building, while the women ensured its cleanliness. Little Zion Baptist Church has always emphasized community. It has provided support and fellowship for generations of members. Notable women like Phyllis White, Missouri Clemons, Betsy White, and others played vital roles in the church’s life. The church also benefited from the contributions of associate ministers, such as Reverend Charlie Griffin, who initiated the Jail Ministry. As the church continued to grow, new programs and services were developed. Its name was officially changed to Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, reflecting its expanded mission. Under Pastor William H. Chatman, who served from 2005 to 2020, the church experienced significant growth and development. Land was purchased, a new van and minibus were acquired, and the pastor’s study was renovated. The church also celebrated the burning of the mortgage on the newly acquired land in 2011. Today, Little Zion Baptist Church continues to serve as a spiritual center in Kenner. It offers a place of worship, fellowship, and community involvement. Its long and storied history is a testament to the dedication and faith of its members.
