Have you heard of a church that went pastor-less for three years? Right here, in front of Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church, such a story unfolded. Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a cornerstone of faith in this community, faced a leadership void until a remarkable man stepped forward. In 2009, Reverend Roland Brown Jr. accepted the call to lead Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He wasn’t the first choice. Five other candidates had been considered, but the church held out for the right leader. Reverend Brown’s installation was a grand affair, with over 400 people expected, two esteemed preachers, and a celebratory dinner at the neighboring Mount Zion Elementary School. Brown’s path to Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church was paved with dedication. He began his ministry at the tender age of six, nurtured by his pastor at New Willow Grove Baptist Church. He held leadership positions from a young age, serving as chairman of the Junior Deacon Board at just ten. He later became president of the Junior Missionary section of the Sharon Missionary Baptist Association. His experience included leading Little Zion Baptist Church in Chesapeake and helping establish Manna Ministry Baptist Church. Reverend Brown arrived at Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church with a clear vision. He outlined five ambitious goals. First, revitalize the dwindling membership, which had fallen to about 65 during the pastoral vacancy. Second, expand the church building to accommodate the anticipated growth. His third and fourth goals hinged on the fate of Mount Zion Elementary School. If the school board decided to close the school, Reverend Brown hoped to acquire the property. He envisioned transforming it into a childcare center, a Christian school, and a workforce education program. His final goal was the construction of a new sanctuary. Reverend Brown aimed to provide vital community services, complementing the work of the nearby Pruden Center by offering job training and placement programs. Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church, though small, held big dreams under Reverend Brown’s leadership. His vision extended beyond the church walls, aiming to be a beacon of hope and opportunity for the entire community.
