Perched on the Hudson River, Little Island appears to float. This whimsical park, also known as Diller Island, is a marvel of modern engineering. Little Island isn’t your typical park. It rests atop 132 tulip-shaped concrete pots, rising from the water like a giant, blossoming flower. These “tulips” stand on 280 pilings driven deep into the riverbed, a feat of engineering overseen by Arup Group. Opened in May 2021, Little Island transformed Pier 55 from a crumbling relic into a vibrant public space. The park boasts stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the New Jersey cityscape. It offers a unique blend of nature and urban life. Landscape architect Signe Nielsen curated a diverse collection of over 350 plant species. These include 35 tree species and 65 shrub species. The plantings create a tapestry of colors and textures that change with the seasons. Little Island has something for everyone. There are winding paths for leisurely strolls, grassy lawns for picnics, and a 687-seat amphitheater, “The Amph,” for performances. Two concession stands operated by Union Square Events offer refreshments and snacks. Little Island was the dream of businessman Barry Diller and his wife, Diane von Fürstenberg. The project faced numerous challenges, including lawsuits and cost overruns that reached $260 million. It was even briefly cancelled in 2017 before being revived by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Today, Little Island stands as a testament to the power of vision and perseverance, a true urban oasis in the heart of New York City.
