Initially, the neighborhood was known as “Little Addis”. This name referenced Addis Ababa. Addis Ababa is Ethiopia’s capital city. In 2002, Los Angeles officially designated the area as Little Ethiopia. By 2006, the neighborhood boasted 15 Ethiopian businesses. These included restaurants, markets, a clothing store, a hair salon, and a travel agency.
Little Ethiopia is located on Fairfax Avenue. It stretches between Olympic Boulevard and Whitworth Drive. The neighborhood is bordered by Carthay Square to the west. Wilshire Vista lies to the east. Faircrest Heights is southwest. Picfair Village is southeast. Miracle Mile is northeast.
Fairfax Avenue has a long history. It has been a meeting place for diverse cultures. In the 1950s, it became an important area for the Jewish community. The original Farmers Market has been a central gathering spot since 1934.
Today, Little Ethiopia is home to several landmarks. The Little Ethiopia Cultural and Resource Center is located at 1045 South Fairfax Avenue. Hansen’s Cakes is another notable spot. It is located at 1060 S Fairfax Ave. This cake shop has been catering to Hollywood’s A-list for nearly 60 years.
