Is it possible for a building to star in a movie? Yes, it is. The California Tower, sometimes referred to as the Lipinski Tower due to a construction company of that name, has appeared in several films.

Now, let’s explore this iconic structure. The Lipinski Tower is a prominent feature of San Diego. It can be seen from miles away. This tower is part of the California Building. The California Building houses the Museum of Us.

Built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, the Lipinski Tower showcases varied architectural styles. These include Baroque, Plateresque, Churrigueresque, and Rococo, plus some Gothic details. Bertram Goodhue designed it. He drew inspiration from Spanish-Colonial churches in Mexico. Ornate details, arched arcades, carvings, busts, and colorful tiles adorn the tower and domes.

You can visit the Lipinski Tower at the Museum of Us. It is open Wednesday through Sunday. Guided tours are available four times a day. Tour times are 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 4:00 pm. Groups are limited to six people. Booking tickets online is recommended.

A California Tower tour offers a unique San Diego experience. The tour guides talk about Balboa Park’s origins. They also highlight the diverse communities of the region. The tour ends with 360-degree views of San Diego from the tower’s eighth-floor viewing deck.

From the Lipinski Tower, you can see many landmarks. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean. Look east to see the Cuyamaca Mountains. To the north, spot the San Diego Zoo’s Skyfari. Look northwest for the California Dome.

The Lipinski Tower’s height is impressive. The very top, including the weather vane, is 462 feet above sea level. The viewing deck sits 357 feet above sea level.

Keep in mind that climbing the Lipinski Tower requires some physical effort. There are 125 steps from the entrance to the public viewing deck. If you start from the California Plaza steps, there are 157 to 164 steps in total. The climb is not recommended for pregnant women or people with certain health conditions.

The Lipinski Tower wasn’t built to be a bell tower. It didn’t have music until 1946. Now, an electronic carillon creates the tower’s music. The music can be heard for at least a mile.

Lights, camera, action. The California Tower, or Lipinski Tower, was featured in Citizen Kane. It doubled as Xanadu, Charles Foster Kane’s mansion. The Lipinski Tower also appeared in Top Dog, Almost Famous, Traffic, and Anchorman.

The Lipinski Tower is not just a structure. It is a symbol of San Diego’s history and culture. Its beauty and panoramic views make it a must-see attraction. So, climb those steps and immerse yourself in the story of this remarkable tower.
