Have you ever imagined a fountain that represents peace and coexistence? Look, right here, in front of you is the Lions Fountain. It was designed by the German sculptor Gernot Rumpf and gifted to the city of Jerusalem by the West German government in 1989. The fountain is a symbol of Jerusalem’s diverse population, where people of different religions and cultures come together. The central tree with three branches symbolizes the three major religions of Jerusalem – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The tree of life is surrounded by bronze lions, representing the strength and power of each religion. At the feet of the lions, doves and mice represent the desire for peace and coexistence. This beautiful fountain is a reminder that even in a city with a complex history, there is always hope for harmony between people.
