Whyis this place called Lion Cave you ask? Because legend has it that Guru Rinpoche himself arrived here on the back of a tigress. Not just any tigress though. This tigress was engulfed in flames. This is Lion Cave, also known as Singye Phu Lhakhang. It is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in all of Bhutan. Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, is a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism. He is credited with bringing Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. He is said to have meditated here at Lion Cave, leaving behind his body imprint as a testament to his presence. The journey to Lion Cave is not for the faint of heart. It’s a three-day trek from the nearest road, but upon arriving, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a profound sense of peace. For centuries, people have been making this journey. They seek blessings and spiritual fulfillment. Today, you can witness that same spirit of devotion in the prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the chanting of monks echoing through the mountains.
