Linh Ung Pagoda

Gazing up at the serene white statue of the Goddess of Mercy, haven’t you ever wondered about the stories whispered within the Linh Ung Pagoda’s walls? Linh Ung Pagoda isn’t just a temple. It’s a beacon of hope, standing tall on the Son Tra Peninsula. Overlooking the East Sea, Linh Ung Pagoda is a place where mountains meet the sea, and heaven touches earth. This isn’t just the largest pagoda in Da Nang; it holds the tallest Guan Yin statue in all of Vietnam, a towering 67 meters of pure white compassion. Legends say that long ago, during King Minh Mang’s reign, a Buddha statue mysteriously drifted ashore. The local fishermen, seeing this as a divine sign, built a small shrine. The once-turbulent waters calmed, blessing the fishermen with bountiful catches. That very spot, now called Bai But, meaning “Buddha realm in the middle of the world”, became the foundation of Linh Ung Pagoda. The pagoda we see today, completed in 2010, beautifully blends contemporary and traditional Vietnamese architecture. The main hall, with its dragon-roof and sturdy pillars, houses statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. Surrounding them are 18 Arhat statues, each capturing a unique human emotion. But the true marvel is the Lady Buddha, her serene gaze watching over Da Nang. Locals believe her presence protects the city from storms. At night, the illuminated statue casts a breathtaking shadow on the clouds, a spectacle some believe is a divine apparition.
