“Poseidon” a 400-ton motor ship. That’s what first unloaded at the Lindener Hafen Plaque. This plaque commemorates the opening of the Linden harbor on April 18 1917. It was a significant event. Linden a city independent at the time invested heavily in its construction. This plaque shows how the Mittelland Canal transformed Hanover into a major port city.

The three canal ports in the north and east and Linden in the west became important freight hubs. Goods moved seamlessly between waterways railways and roads. The Linden harbor sits at the end of an 11 kilometer side canal. This canal branches south of Lohnde from the Mittelland Canal. The city council of Linden financed a significant portion of the construction. They contributed 4802000 Marks. A massive area of 464000 square meters was cleared for the port.

The initial success was remarkable. The first year alone saw 718 ships unloading approximately 500000 tons of coal. The harbor’s strategic location near Linden’s industrial areas fueled its rapid growth. A railway line connected the harbor to the wider network. This made transportation of goods significantly easier. This success story however was not without challenges. The limited space within the city hampered the development of associated industries. There was also a lack of a direct connection to the German Reichsbahn. These factors are what contributed to the decline of the nearby Leinehafen.

The Lindener Hafen however thrived. It developed into a major shipping and logistics center. The harbor continued to adapt. In 1991 a new facility for combined road rail freight transport was added. Today around 50 companies employing approximately 3000 people are based in the Lindener Hafen area. The primary industries include the petrochemical sector scrap metal recycling steel trade forwarding construction and cement. The Lindener Hafen also houses four-fifths of Hanover’s grain storage capacity.

The Lindener Hafen Plaque stands as a testament to Hanover’s industrial past. It stands also as a symbol of the city’s economic resilience and adaptability. The history of the Lindener Hafen is a dynamic one. This shows the city’s capacity for growth even amidst adversity. This little plaque therefore represents much more than just a harbor. It depicts a story of innovation ambition and enduring success.
