But what makes the Linden Cogeneration Plant truly special? It’s the smart-aleck details. For example it’s a combined cycle cogeneration plant. This means it efficiently generates both electricity and steam. The steam isn’t wasted. It’s used by the nearby Bayway refinery. Talk about synergy!
And the fuel? Primarily natural gas. But here’s the clever part. In case of a natural gas shortage the plant can switch to waste oil. Resourcefulness at its finest isn’t it? The fuel is sourced from PSE&G Pipeline ensuring a reliable supply. The sheer scale of its energy production is staggering. The plant generated a monumental 5088263 MWh of electricity.
This isn’t just some anonymous energy plant. It has a fascinating history. A power purchase agreement with Consolidated Edison Co of New York secured the plant’s future. The agreement guaranteed the purchase of 715 MW of power for 25 years starting in 1992.
General Electric played a crucial role. They provided the turbines the heart of this industrial giant. Five units of their 7E.03 gas turbines each with a capacity of 95.2 MW were installed. To maximize efficiency three units of GE’s D11 steam turbines were also added. GE also supplied the electric generators. Nooter/Eriksen contributed as well providing the essential steam boilers.
