“Did you know this airport wasn’t always here?” the tour guide asked, gesturing towards the modern facade of Limbang Airport. “Before Limbang Airport became a reality in 2004, there was a much smaller airfield.” The guide paused, letting the image settle in the minds of the eager listeners. “Imagine a tiny airstrip, carved out by the British Army back in 1963 during a time of political tension between Malaysia and Indonesia. It was a time when this region was a focal point of international attention.” The old Limbang STOL airfield, he explained, perched precariously beside Mas Hill, had its share of challenges. The old airfield, while historically significant, couldn’t keep up with the demands of modern aviation. It was deemed unsafe by international standards, its approach and departure paths fraught with obstacles. This spurred the ambitious project to create a new airport, a project that finally took flight in the year 2000. After four years of tireless work and meticulous planning, Limbang Airport came into existence. Today, Limbang Airport stands as a testament to progress, capable of accommodating larger aircraft and welcoming travelers from across the globe. The guide smiled, “And that, my friends, is how Limbang Airport transformed from a small military airstrip into the modern aviation hub it is today.”
