A whisper of history hangs in the air. This is L’Île-Dorval. Imagine a tiny island a haven of peace in the vast expanse of Lake Saint-Louis.

L’Île-Dorval is more than just an island. It’s a microcosm of Montreal’s rich past. It’s a place where history whispers secrets through the rustling leaves. Founded in 1691 Jean-Baptiste Bouchard acquired the fief of Fort La Présentation. This included the island. He added “d’Orval” to his name. It referred to his father’s hometown of Orval in France.

Fast forward to the mid-1800s. George Simpson the Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company owned the island. He hosted a lavish party for the Prince of Wales in 1860. Can you picture the elegant gowns and the clinking of champagne flutes?

In 1915 a group of ambitious entrepreneurs saw potential. They transformed the island. They created Ville d’Île Dorval. They brought electricity water and even a tram. This supported residential development. The name was later adjusted to L’Île-Dorval.

The 20th century brought change. L’Île-Dorval merged with Montreal. Then after a referendum in 2004 it regained its independence. This happened in 2006. Today only 30 permanent residents call L’Île-Dorval home. It is one of Canada’s smallest municipalities.

A seasonal ferry connects the island to Dorval. Vehicles are prohibited except for the garbage truck. It’s a world away from the bustling city.

L’Île-Dorval is a testament to resilience and a treasure trove of history. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine. It’s a place where you can step back in time. It’s a place you won’t soon forget.
