Have you heard about the Lijiasha Grand Bridge? It is more than just a way to cross the Hongqili Waterway. It is a vital link for Sanmin Island.

The Lijiasha Grand Bridge is also known as Lixindao Bridge. Some people call it Sanmin Island Bridge. Others refer to it as Hongqili Second Bridge.

This bridge connects Sanmin Island to Jiuyong and Guangzhou. Sanmin Island is small. It relies on this bridge for access to the city. The Lijiasha Grand Bridge is the only land connection.

Completed in April 1994, the Lijiasha Grand Bridge is 787 meters long. It is 9.8 meters wide. The bridge has a single carriageway. There is no pedestrian walkway on the Lijiasha Grand Bridge. Watercraft pass through its main and secondary navigation holes.

Interestingly, the Lijiasha Grand Bridge carries the island’s only water supply pipeline. Imagine Sanmin Island without fresh water. This bridge ensures the islanders have access to this basic need.

In 2009, authorities reinforced the Lijiasha Grand Bridge. This increased its load capacity. However, inspections in 2019 revealed severe deterioration. It was classified as a Category 4 bridge. As a result, only vehicles weighing less than 15 tonnes could use it.

Rectification and reinforcement work occurred in 2020. After that, the Lijiasha Grand Bridge was re-rated as Category 2. Vehicles up to 20 tonnes were then allowed to cross.

In October 2021, officials assessed water navigation. They decided to add anti-collision measures to the Lijiasha Grand Bridge and Gaoxinsha Bridge. The work finished in December 2022.

On February 22, 2024, disaster struck. A cargo barge collided with a pier. This caused part of the Lijiasha Grand Bridge to collapse. It fractured the deck and sent debris into the water. The incident disrupted life on Sanmin Island.

Repair work was completed by May 23, 2024. By June 12, authorities certified the Lijiasha Grand Bridge safe for use. Finally, on June 22, the bridge reopened to traffic.

The Lijiasha Grand Bridge is more than concrete and steel. It is a lifeline. It is a testament to resilience. The bridge stands as a crucial part of Guangzhou’s infrastructure. It connects people and provides essential services. Next time you cross a bridge, remember the story of the Lijiasha Grand Bridge.
