“We exist to proclaim the reign of Jesus Christ over all things” This powerful vision statement echoes through the halls of Lighthouse Community Church of God. It’s a statement that resonates not only within these walls but also throughout the rich history of this Detroit institution.

Lighthouse Community Church of God wasn’t always here. Its story begins much earlier as First Reformed Church in Allendale. For over 90 years it stood proudly at the corner of 60th Avenue and Lake Michigan Drive. This wasn’t just a building it was a community a living testament to faith. However the church’s journey took an unexpected turn. A deeper commitment to outreach and a reevaluation of denominational ties led to a significant transformation.

First Reformed Church became Lighthouse Community Church. A new building a new mission a new chapter. This wasn’t a simple name change. It signified a bold move away from the Reformed Church in America. This decision stemmed from a growing conviction that the denomination’s stance on scripture was not aligned with Lighthouse’s beliefs. It was a difficult yet necessary step. Their petition to withdraw was denied. The congregation voted overwhelmingly to leave regardless of the potential consequences.

The cost was steep. The church lost its building a structure erected in 2004 through the hard work and donations of its members. The Zeeland Classis claimed the building. It was a devastating blow.Yet the spirit of Lighthouse remained unbroken.

After much prayer and reflection the church leadership made a difficult decision. They chose not to fight for the building. They released it.Twelve people stayed. They moved to an elementary school. This wasn’t just a temporary setback. This was a test of their faith a moment that would define their resilience.

God provided office space a large meeting room even another building for their Wednesday evening ministries. They worshipped in three different schools over six years. Their faith remained steadfast.

Then came a turning point. A ten-acre property on Lake Michigan Drive presented itself. It was a prime location. The congregation rallied. They raised the down payment. They purchased the land.

In 2015 plans for a new building began to materialize. Construction started in 2016. The project proceeded in phases. First offices and classrooms then a worship center a kitchen and additional restrooms. This wasn’t just building a church. It was building a future. It was a testament to their enduring faith their unwavering commitment to their community and their unwavering belief in their mission.

The new Lighthouse Community Church of God opened its doors in June 2018 exactly six years after leaving their previous building. This building stands as a beacon of hope a symbol of perseverance a testament to the power of faith in the face of adversity. It is a place of worship a place of community a place where the reign of Jesus Christ is proclaimed. A place where God’s faithfulness is clearly shown.
