Did you ever hear of a church that started in a hospital and grew to span across continents? Right here, in Kumasi, stands the Lighthouse Chapel. This is a branch of a denomination with an incredible story. It all began in 1987 at the Korle-Bu Christian Centre in Accra. A medical student named Dag Heward-Mills felt a calling beyond medicine. He became the pastor of the small congregation. Driven by a vision to reach beyond the hospital walls, he renamed the church “The Lighthouse Chapel” that same year. The Lighthouse Chapel in Kumasi, like its sister churches across the globe, is part of this incredible journey of faith. The church’s growth was remarkable. It quickly outgrew its initial location and moved to the School of Hygiene Lecture Theatre. With a growing congregation of 500, they added a second service. In 1991, Heward-Mills dedicated himself fully to ministry, leaving medicine behind. By 1992, the church purchased an old cinema in Korle Gonno, transforming it into a 3,000-seat sanctuary. From this central point, a vision for global expansion emerged. Heward-Mills began teaching about church planting, sending missionaries across borders to establish new Lighthouse Chapels. The church expanded internationally, reaching various countries. Lighthouse Chapel International has become a global denomination. It operates in numerous countries across the world. It is actively involved in training pastors and building churches. It even extends to humanitarian efforts. The Lighthouse Chapel International also provides support to the needy. This includes helping the blind, prisoners, the poor, the sick and widows. This expansive network of churches all started from humble beginnings. The Lighthouse Chapel in Kumasi stands as a testament to that vision. It serves as a beacon of faith. It is a place for worship and community. It continues the mission of spreading light and hope. It’s a reminder of the power of a vision that started small but grew to touch countless lives worldwide.
