Doesn’t the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex radiate innovation? This building, known as ISEC, is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents Northeastern University’s commitment to cutting-edge research and collaboration.
ISEC officially opened its doors on April 3, 2017. But the story began much earlier. The university proposed the complex in its 2012 Institutional Master Plan. Payette won the design contest in April 2013. Their design focused on energy efficiency. The building broke ground in February 2014 and was topped off in June 2016.
Suffolk Construction was the primary contractor. Arup Group and Vanasse Hangen Brustlin provided engineering. The grand opening was a major event. Researchers, students, and faculty attended.
ISEC quickly gained recognition. In 2018, the Boston Society of Architects awarded it the Harleston Parker Medal. This award recognizes it as one of Boston’s most beautiful buildings. In 2019, it won an AIA COTE Top 10 Award.
The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex spans 234000 square feet. Inside, you will find labs, classrooms, offices, and research facilities. The central atrium is a striking feature. It extends through all six floors. A spiral staircase winds its way up. The open design encourages collaboration. Research is on full display for everyone to see.
ISEC was built on a former parking lot. Sustainability was a key consideration. The building achieved LEED Gold certification in 2018. It uses 78% less energy than a typical lab building. A rainwater retention system supplies 57% of the building’s flushing needs. The “solar veil” reduces solar heat gain.
The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex also addressed pedestrian access. A new bridge connects the main campus to the Roxbury neighborhood. This bridge accommodates both pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge opened to the public in June 2019. It received acclaim for its design. The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure awarded it an Envision Bronze award.
Northeastern’s research funding has more than doubled. The university has hired many new faculty members. The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex has housed significant research projects. One notable project involves humanoid robots. In partnership with NASA, researchers are programming Valkyrie to explore Mars.
The completion of ISEC marked a turning point for Northeastern University. It symbolizes a new era of research and innovation. ISEC embodies Northeastern’s commitment to shaping the future.
