Can a church have multiple lives? Life Church Smyrna Assembly of God certainly has. Its story begins not here on King Springs Road, but on a quiet street corner, in the home of W.G. and Betty Graham. It was January 7, 1953, when a small group, led by Reverend Arnold Ford, gathered for the first meeting of what would eventually become Life Church Smyrna Assembly of God. They soon purchased a seemingly forgotten building on Hawthorne Street for a mere $550. The building, formerly Mount Zion Baptist Church, became their first sanctuary. This was a humble beginning for Life Church Smyrna Assembly of God, a testament to their faith and determination. Under Reverend James L. Spinks, Sunday school rooms were added, a sign of the church’s growth and expanding community. The desire for more space led them to acquire the old Smyrna Presbyterian Church in 1963. Reverend T.C. Harty guided the congregation through this transition. They moved to their new location on Church Street after some much-needed roof repairs. The church continued to evolve under Reverend Harris Fennell, with further improvements in 1967 and additional assembly areas added in 1971. However, the physical limitations of the Church Street property became apparent. In 1978, a bold decision was made to relocate once more, setting their sights on King Springs Road. The Church Street property was sold to First Baptist Church of Smyrna in 1982. The congregation moved to 4100 King Springs Road in January 1983. While their new church was under construction, Sunday services were held at Griffin Middle School. Wednesday evening services found a home in a mobile chapel. Finally, on July 1, 1984, the first service was held in their new building on King Springs Road. The journey continued, with groundbreaking for a new sanctuary in 1997 and the election of Reverend Jon Fennell as pastor in 1998. The new sanctuary opened its doors on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 1998. Life Church Smyrna Assembly of God has continued to thrive under Reverend Shell Osbon, who became pastor in 2003. It has become a spiritual home for people from over 35 nations. Renovations and additions have enhanced the facility, including a new Student Chapel and a Chapel Café. Life Church Smyrna Assembly of God has a remarkable story of faith, growth, and adaptation.
