Liegende Frau mit Frucht Sculpture

Was it a mermaid? That’s what some Bamberg residents might have wondered in 2005 when they saw a voluptuous bronze figure adrift in the Regnitz. This, my friends, is the story of the Liegende Frau mit Frucht, Fernando Botero’s curvaceous sculpture that took an unexpected bath. The Liegende Frau mit Frucht, or “Reclining Woman with Fruit,” is a quintessential Botero piece. His signature style celebrates full-figured forms, challenging conventional beauty standards. Bamberg acquired the sculpture in 1998, sparking a debate about modern art’s place in this historic city. The purchase, funded by private donors, ultimately led to the creation of the Bamberg Sculpture Trail, a permanent exhibition in public spaces. The Liegende Frau mit Frucht became a centerpiece of this trail. Fast forward to 2005. Bamberg was celebrating its 10th Antiques Week. Someone had the bright idea to place the Liegende Frau mit Frucht on a platform in the Regnitz River, hoping to attract tourists. Sadly, they miscalculated. The platform capsized, sending the 870 kg bronze beauty tumbling into the water. Imagine the scene: the fire brigade, the BRK water rescue service, and the THW all working together to rescue Botero’s bather. Today, the Liegende Frau mit Frucht graces the Heumarkt, near Maxplatz, none the worse for her watery adventure. She stands, or rather, reclines, as a testament to artistic expression and a reminder of that time a Botero became a Bamberg mermaid, albeit briefly.
