Twelve giant light containers hang from the ceiling. This is the Lichtspiel Bahnsteig HafenCity Universität. They illuminate the platform with a mesmerizing display of color. The Lichtspiel Bahnsteig HafenCity Universität isn’t just a subway station. It’s an art installation.

Opened on November 29 2012 the Lichtspiel Bahnsteig HafenCity Universität was once the terminus of the U4 line. Now trains simply pass through. The light show however remains a highlight. The station’s design is inspired by harbor elements. Dark brown metal plates clad the walls. The station name is etched into them. The ceiling also features perforated metal plates for sound reduction.

Each of these six-ton light containers measures the size of a 20-foot shipping container. Inside 280 colored LEDs create dynamic lighting effects. The colors shift subtly throughout the day. They react to the time of year and even the weather. The light reflects beautifully off the metal walls. The Lichtspiel Bahnsteig HafenCity Universität truly is a spectacle of light and design.

But the Lichtspiel Bahnsteig HafenCity Universität offers more than just visual stimulation. On weekends and holidays between 10 am and 6 pm a special light and sound show takes place. Each hour on the hour classic music plays above the platforms. The light containers synchronize their color changes to the music. It is a multisensory experience. It transforms a simple commute into a mini-concert.

The Lichtspiel Bahnsteig HafenCity Universität received the Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design in 2013. This award from the International Association of Lighting Designers is a testament to its innovative design. The station’s architects were Raupach Architekten. The lighting design came from Pfarré Lighting Design. Industrielle designers Stauss & Pedrazzini completed the winning design team.
