Established in 1911 the Liceo classico Giovanni Berchet stands proudly in Milan. It’s one of the city’s oldest classical high schools. This prestigious institution quickly became a hub for Milan’s burgeoning bourgeoisie. Their children flocked to its hallowed halls. The need for more space was evident. The existing schools like Beccaria Parini and Manzoni were simply overwhelmed.

The Liceo Berchet wasn’t just about academics. It was a breeding ground for intellectual ferment. In 1931 students showed their defiance of Fascism. They applauded Arturo Toscanini after his refusal to play Fascist anthems in Bologna. This bold act highlighted the school’s independent spirit. Most professors however joined the Fascist Party. Only Mario Untersteiner remained an exception. Today his name graces the school’s auditorium.

The Liceo Berchet played a significant role in the post-war era. Luigi Giussani taught religion there. He established Gioventù Studentesca. This student group later became the Comunione e Liberazione movement. The school became a center of Catholic intellectual life. Its influence sparked considerable debate then and continues to do so today.

The Liceo Berchet boasts an impressive library with over 25000 volumes. There are physics and anatomy labs. A chemistry lab also exists. A mineral museum is onsite. Students even have access to a climbing wall. The school’s orchestra choir and theatre company showcase their talents.

In 2011 UNESCO recognized the Liceo Berchet as Italy’s top high school. The city of Milan awarded it the Civic Merit Award. The award coincided with the school’s centennial celebration. A symbolic event took place. Diplomas were given to former students. These students were denied their education due to Fascist racial laws.

However the Liceo Berchet is not without its challenges. In 2023 a significant number of students left. This high dropout rate is attributed to oppressive school practices. The students expressed their concerns in an open letter.

The Liceo classico Giovanni Berchet is more than just a school. It’s a living testament to Milan’s intellectual history. It’s a place of learning courage and enduring legacy. Its story continues to unfold.
