Established in 1603 the Liceo classico Cesare Beccaria in Milan boasts a rich history. It’s one of Italy’s oldest continuously operating schools. Initially founded by Barnabite fathers near the Church of Sant’Alessandro it was known as the Arcimboldi schools. A generous donation from Giambattista Arcimboldi made the school accessible to the poor.

Cardinal Federico Borromeo himself inaugurated the public schools in 1609. The Liceo Beccaria survived various rulers from Spanish to Austrian. Under French rule the schools transformed into lyceums. In 1810 the Barnabite order dissolved. The school became known as the Sant’Alessandro Lyceum.

The Austrian return in 1815 didn’t change much. Milan’s growing population warranted two lyceums. Sant’Alessandro and Porta Nuova. Italian unification brought changes. The lyceums expanded their curriculum.

Then in 1865 a significant shift occurred. Italian schools were dedicated to national or local figures. The Sant’Alessandro Lyceum was renamed Liceo Beccaria. Porta Nuova became Liceo Parini. Lower grades separated in 1941 forming a middle school.

In 1957 the Liceo Beccaria moved to its current location on Via Linneo. Its four hundredth anniversary was celebrated in 2003. A small museum showcasing scientific instruments remains. The school archives from the Arcimboldi schools are also preserved.

The Liceo Beccaria’s legacy is impressive. Countless notable alumni have graced its halls. Giuseppe Parini Cesare Cantù Giovanni Berchet Carlo Porta and Carlo Cattaneo are just a few. The school’s commitment to excellence continues today.

It balances traditional humanistic studies with contemporary needs. Students can pursue advanced studies in mathematics or art history. Extracurricular activities such as the Grecale translation project and the Meltemi student newspaper flourish. The school has a multimedia lab and language labs. Its rich past contributes to its vibrant present. The Liceo classico Cesare Beccaria stands as a testament to enduring academic excellence.
