Doesn’t it strike you as remarkable how a library can transform a city? The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System is more than just books. It’s a cornerstone of this community.

Let’s delve into the story of the Library. Its origins trace back to the Young Men’s Library Association in 1867. Only paying members could check out books. However, this association laid the groundwork for what was to come.

In 1902, the Carnegie Library opened its doors. This marked the beginning of free public library service in Atlanta. Andrew Carnegie’s generosity made it possible. The Carnegie Library quickly became a vital resource. Within a year, Carnegie offered more money for branch libraries.

Initially, the Library excluded Black residents. Activist W. E. B. Du Bois fought for equal access. In 1921, the Auburn Avenue Branch Library opened. It was the first branch for African Americans. Full integration came in 1959. Irene Dobbs Jackson played a key role.

The Atlanta Public Library grew over the years. In 1935, library service extended to all of Fulton County. By 1967, the system had 19 branches. In 1983, the system became the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System.

The Central Library serves as the headquarters. It was completed in 1980. Marcel Breuer designed the building. His design is in the brutalist architectural style. Experts consider it a masterpiece.

Several branches enhance the system. The Roswell Branch started with volunteers in 1946. The Cleveland Avenue Branch has a rooftop solar installation. The 2008 bond referendum brought significant improvements. New libraries were built and renovated.

The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the changing needs of the community. From its humble beginnings to its present-day impact. The library system remains a testament to the power of knowledge. It is a beacon of learning for all. The Library enriches the lives of countless individuals. It fosters a love of reading. It promotes intellectual curiosity.

As we conclude our visit here today, take a moment to appreciate the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. Its enduring legacy of service and commitment to the people of Atlanta and Fulton County will last long. This system enriches our community.
