Opened in 1934 by King George V Manchester Central Library stands as a magnificent neoclassical structure. Its design loosely mimics the Pantheon in Rome. The library’s impressive facade is only a prelude to its grandeur. Inside visitors are greeted by a stunning Great Hall. This features a dome inscribed with words of wisdom from the Book of Proverbs.

Originally designed by E Vincent Harris the library’s interior layout was inspired by American library systems. This meant many books were hidden from view. Readers had to request them. This differed greatly from traditional British libraries. In 2014 Ryder Architecture renovated the building. The American-style stacks were removed. Now millions of books are readily accessible to the public.

The renovation also unveiled a wealth of architectural details. These include beautiful statues and antique decorations. One notable piece is the Reading Girl a marble statue by Giovanni Ciniselli. It was gifted to the library in 1938 by the Parkyn family. A bit of mystery surrounds what the girl is writing. That adds to the statue’s allure.

Beyond the books Manchester Central Library boasts other remarkable features. The Shakespeare Hall showcases local heraldry and stunning stained-glass windows. These windows are a memorial to Rosa E Grindon. The library also played host to the Library Theatre Company for years. This theatre company produced plays that even reached the West End.

Even today Manchester Central Library thrives. It remains a cultural hub for the city. It hosts various events from computer sessions to children’s classes. It offers digital resources alongside traditional books. Its role in the community remains central. The library’s influence endures proving the power of libraries to adapt and evolve.
