Have you ever wondered about the history behind the Liberty Methodist Church? It’s right here, a towering aluminum plaque, standing tall on a pole, proudly displaying a Texas Historical Commission marker. The marker tells us a story: it all started in 1840, when Reverend Hugh Fields, who had migrated from Mississippi, preached the first Methodist sermon in Liberty, and you are standing precisely where that sermon was delivered. The marker tells of many trials and tribulations, a log church being built and then destroyed by a storm. This led to the construction of a one-room frame structure in 1854, where members worshipped until a two-story brick structure was erected in 1930. Another intriguing fact is that the church even acquired a bell in 1873 from a steamboat, the Black Cloud, that sank in the Trinity River, and that bell is still in use today. The plaque tells us about the continued growth of Liberty Methodist Church, and how it has remained an integral part of the community. It has participated in many local events, including the Brotherhood Banquet, sponsored by the men’s Bible class since 1927, and supported by people of all faiths. So as you stand here, you can almost hear the echoes of history, the passionate sermons delivered, the melodies of hymns sung, and the lives touched by this enduring institution.
