How about stepping into Libercourt, a town with a past entwined with coal and community? Libercourt is a French commune located in the Pas-de-Calais department. It sits in the Hauts-de-France region. This is a story of transformation from a hamlet to a thriving town.
Libercourt wasn’t always Libercourt. Once, it was just part of Carvin. Imagine a small community of 700 souls in 1875. People sought their own identity. They wanted recognition separate from Carvin. It took decades of petitions. Finally, in 1947, Libercourt became its own town. A decree from the Council of State made it official. The arguments for independence were strong. Libercourt had a growing population. It was five kilometers from Carvin. A two-kilometer forest separated them. Libercourt also had a train station, a coal mine, factories and a sand quarry. The town even boasted two schools and a parish. This parish had existed for 50 years.
The coal mining boom fueled Libercourt’s growth. The population soared to nearly 10,000. People came from Poland, Italy, Portugal, Algeria and Morocco. They sought work in the mines and brought their families. This diversity still shapes Libercourt today.
The mines weren’t the only factor. The opening of the Libercourt train station in 1865 was also important. It connected Libercourt to Paris and Lille. This made Libercourt a vital hub.
The town center used to be between Notre Dame church and the post office. Shops lined the streets. However, as miners settled in new communities the town spread out. The old center lost its importance. Today, Libercourt aims to create a new heart for the town. They hope to revive economic activity. The plan involves bringing homes and shops back to the town square.
Libercourt’s coat of arms tells its story. The town became a commune in 1947. It was once part of Carvin and the principality of Epinoy. Carvin adopted the arms of the Melun family. They ruled the seigneury of Epinoy from 1327 to 1724. In 1959, Libercourt gained territory from Oignies. This included part of the hamlet of Garguetelles. One part belonged to Epinoy. The other was imperial land. The arms were gold and silver with an eagle. The director of the departmental archives suggested a divided shield. The left shows the arms of Melun. The right shows the imperial arms. A mural crown tops the shield.
Today, Libercourt is a town moving forward. It recognizes its past. Libercourt embraces its future. It is located near major European routes. Brussels, Paris and London are within easy reach. Libercourt has its own access point on the A1 highway. The high-speed train line connects it to major cities. Libercourt has transformed into a green space. It has a strategic location.
