Can you hear the gentle murmur of the Liangshui River? It speaks of a transformation, a journey from murky depths to a vibrant waterway. The Liangshui River, stretching over 68 kilometers through seven districts of Beijing, has a rich history spanning over 1,400 years. It flows into the Grand Canal, the world’s longest artificial waterway. For centuries, the Liangshui River served as a vital artery for transportation, drainage, and irrigation. However, rapid urban expansion and population growth between the 1970s and 1990s took a toll. The once clear waters became polluted. The river’s ecosystem suffered. A foul odor permeated the air, driving residents indoors. Remember the stories of residents like Mr. Huang, who lives on the north bank? He cycles along the Liangshui River daily now, enjoying the clean water and beautiful scenery. But just a few years ago, the stench was unbearable, especially in the summer. The transformation of the Liangshui River began in 2013. Beijing authorities launched a campaign to combat river pollution. They blocked 86 major sewage outlets. New sewage and recycled water pipelines were installed. Sewage treatment facilities were upgraded. The Huaifang Recycled Water Plant now plays a crucial role, injecting fresh, recycled water into the Xiaolong River, a tributary of the Liangshui. Beyond infrastructure improvements, authorities dredged the river. They increased green spaces along the riverbanks, creating a lush environment. The community also stepped up. In 2017, Beijing implemented a river chief system. Individuals like Gong Jingbo, a community Party secretary and resident near the Liangshui River for 18 years, became river chiefs. They patrol the river regularly, reporting illegal activities and ensuring its protection. The combined efforts have paid off. The Liangshui River now teems with life. A 2022 survey identified 43 bird species, including 23 waterfowl varieties, inhabiting the area. The Liangshui River has become a haven for nature lovers and photographers. The river’s transformation symbolizes Beijing’s commitment to ecological restoration. It showcases the power of collective action. The Liangshui River’s story reminds us that even the most polluted waterways can be revitalized with dedication and a shared vision.
