Imagine the roar of cannons echoing across the Rock. That’s the sound Lewis’ Battery once made. Right here before you stands a relic of Gibraltar’s rich military past. Lewis’ Battery a place where history whispers on the wind.

This impressive artillery battery is named after Major George Lewis. He was a significant figure in the Royal Artillery. He commanded during the Great Siege. Construction began in June 1910 and was completed by 1912. Two mighty 6-inch Mark VII BL guns were positioned on center pivot mounts.

Lewis’ Battery didn’t enjoy a long operational life. It was decommissioned after 1918. Yet its story doesn’t end there. The battery held a substantial arsenal. 900 full cartridges and 600 shells were stored here. These were presumably split evenly between the two guns. Think of the firepower.

During World War II Lewis’ Battery found a new purpose. It became an anti-aircraft position. 40mm Bofors guns were installed. One gun position served a crucial role. It housed an electric fighting light for nearby Tovey Battery. The other light illuminated Governor’s Lookout Battery. These lights were vital for defense.

Despite its decommissioning the battery largely remains intact. There were once shelters for soldiers. These are now gone. The underground works for the northern gun are remarkably well preserved. The southern gun’s entrance was blocked. It was cleared in 2019 during partial restoration works.

Today Lewis’ Battery stands as a testament to Gibraltar’s strategic importance. It’s a silent guardian a symbol of past conflicts. Its story reminds us of the bravery and resilience of those who served here. Take a moment to appreciate the legacy of Lewis’ Battery. Let its echoes resound in your memory.
