A beacon of light against the Hamburg sky. That’s the Leuchtturm Ellerholzhafen. This unassuming lighthouse stands between the entrances to the Kaiser Wilhelm and Ellerholz harbors. It’s a silent guardian of the Elbe River.

The Leuchtturm Ellerholzhafen is more than just a navigational aid. It’s a piece of Hamburg’s maritime history. Built between 1901 and 1902 it officially opened on June 20 1903. Its octagonal shape tapers gracefully upwards. The red brick tower is topped with a striking green copper lantern room. This elegant structure stands 19 meters tall.

Initially it served as a mole light guiding ships safely into port. But times changed. In 1969 the Leuchtturm Ellerholzhafen was transformed. A radar beacon was added to its copper lantern room. A radar antenna now sits atop the taller copper structure. This upgrade modernized its role in navigation.

For almost eighty years it was known as the Ellerholzhoft Lighthouse. From roughly 1910 until 1990 this was its official name. It quietly kept watch over the shipping lanes. It silently guided countless vessels through the often-treacherous waters. A testament to its enduring importance it was granted landmark status in September 2009. A decision made following an application submitted on May 17 2005.

The Leuchtturm Ellerholzhafen is more than just bricks and copper. It’s a symbol of Hamburg’s rich maritime heritage. It’s a story of adaptation and resilience. A silent witness to centuries of maritime activity on the Elbe. It’s a tribute to the ingenuity and perseverance of those who built and maintained it. This unassuming lighthouse continues its vital watch. A beacon of light and a testament to Hamburg’s enduring connection to the sea.
