The Lettisches Centrum Münster stands as a beacon for Latvian culture in Germany. Founded in 1986 it’s much more than a building. It’s a home away from home for Latvians who found refuge in Münster. Its roots however run much deeper.
Before the Lettisches Centrum there was the Latvian Gymnasium. Established in 1951 it provided education for Latvian refugees fleeing Soviet occupation. Imagine the courage it took to rebuild lives in a foreign land. To maintain their language and traditions in the face of adversity. The gymnasium even housed a boarding school. It was a lifeline for many young Latvians keeping their culture alive. Egils Levits the current President of Latvia even studied there briefly in 1972-73. It’s a remarkable fact demonstrating the school’s international reach.
The Lettisches Centrum inherited this rich legacy. It continues the work of preserving Latvian culture and heritage. It offers adult education programs a kindergarten and summer school. It ensures that Latvian traditions live on through the generations.
Look closer at the building itself. Its design is intentional. The red and white color scheme echoes the Latvian flag. The wood carvings inside especially in the main hall are breathtaking. They’re the work of Latvian artist Siegfried Sapies. They depict the traditional architecture of Kurzeme showing the importance of family and home. Even the large stones outside tell a story. These stones from Latvia commemorate the sacrifices made during World War II. One stone bears the Austra symbol and the dates 1918-1990 symbolizing Latvia’s independence.
