Letter’s story stretches back centuries. It was first documented in 1178. Back then it wasn’t called Letter but in 1265 the name “Letter” appeared.
Letter remained a small village for a long time. Around 1890 Letter had only 500 inhabitants. It was one of the smallest villages in the area.
Then, in 1909, the Seelze marshalling yard opened. This was a game changer. Industries settled in Seelze and Stöcken. Letter became a desirable place to live thanks to its good transport connections and proximity to the city.
Letter grew and grew. For many years it was the largest district. In 1974 Letter became part of the municipality of Seelze. Seelze was granted town status in 1977.
Letter’s coat of arms tells a story. Adopted in 1955 it shows Letter’s location between the Stichkanal Hannover-Linden and the Leine river. The urn represents archaeological finds made in Letter.
Letter has several churches. St Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was consecrated in 1956. Look for the mosaic relief above the entrance. It depicts the Annunciation to the Shepherds. Peter Greve created it in 1960. St Maria Rosenkranz Catholic Church was built in 1954 to 1955. Josef Fehlig designed it. St Ansgar Chapel belongs to the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X. It opened in 2006 in a building that used to be a New Apostolic Church.
Letter is a great place for recreation. The Hinübersche Garten in Marienwerder is nearby. The Wiesenweg is a dike that protects against Leine river floods.
Letter has a stadium called Leinestadion. It hosts soccer and track and field events. It can hold 4000 spectators. Near the stadium is a shooting range.
Letter also offers diverse leisure activities. There is a swimming pool. It is run by the Qualle e. V. association. Also, you can find a minigolf course. A multigenerational playground offers fun for everyone.
Letter has active clubs. The Schützengesellschaft was founded in 1834. Letter-fit is another club. It promotes community. SG Letter 05 is a sports club. Letter hosts several annual events. These include the Schützenfest the chestnut festival and the Christmas market.
Letter even has an open bookcase. It is located at the corner of Im Sande and Freiherr-von-Stein Straße. People can borrow or donate books.
Letter also boasts musical diversity. There is a music school and several music groups.
Letter is well connected. The S-Bahn provides easy access to Hanover. Buses also serve Letter.
Letter is home to several companies. These include a TanQuid tank farm and a steel trader. A commercial area south of the B441 houses many businesses.
Letter offers educational opportunities. The Brüder-Grimm-School is a primary school. The Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium is a secondary school.
Letter has produced notable people. Ernst Bock was a teacher local researcher and author. Hermann Röber was Letter’s mayor for many years. Jürgen Milewski and Werner Olk were soccer players. Michael Thürnau is a TV and radio host. Lina Larissa Strahl is a singer-songwriter and actress.
