Let’s Run Park Seoul isn’t just a park. It’s a living testament to Korea’s rich equestrian history. Built between 1984 and 1988 it hosted prestigious events during the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It finally opened to the public in September 1989.
Before this location Let’s Run Park Seoul had two other homes. The first was in Sinseol-dong. It operated from the early 1920s until after the Korean War. The second was in Ttukseom on the north bank of the Han River. The move to Gwacheon was necessary. The Olympics demanded a larger more modern facility. The equestrian events excluding the individual-jumping final were held here.
The grandstand is impressive. It’s a six-story structure with a basement level. It offers everything from race tickets to restaurants. The racecourse itself is spectacular. It features an oval artificial sand-based track. This track with its two-furlong home straight accommodates over 80000 spectators.
In 2003 a second grandstand Luckyville was added to the existing Happyville. There are races every Saturday and Sunday. These are simulcast from Jeju Island and Busan-Gyeongnam. Major races include the Korean Derby the Minister of Agriculture Cup the President’s Cup and the Grand Prix.
The history of Let’s Run Park Seoul is fascinating. It reflects Korea’s evolving relationship with horse racing. Initially seen negatively as gambling it has transformed into a popular recreational venue. The name change from Seoul Racecourse to Let’s Run Park Seoul in 1998 symbolizes this shift.
Today Let’s Run Park Seoul is more than a racetrack. It offers exciting entertainment for families. There’s a children’s area. There are horse statues and murals everywhere.
