Established in 1882 the Lessing-Gymnasium stands before you. A venerable institution it has witnessed Berlin’s history unfold. Initially a Progymnasium for Wedding and Gesundbrunnen it quickly expanded. Its first home was in the Pankstrasse near Gesundbrunnen. However a new building was constructed between 1884 and 1887. This cost a staggering 562000 Marks. The investment included a main school building a gymnasium and even a director’s residence. In 1887 it officially became the Lessing-Gymnasium a humanistic institution exclusively for boys.

Dr Johannes Quaatz the first headmaster was a stern figure. His academic interests were broad. His 1867 dissertation was on the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. His leadership shaped the school’s early years. Student numbers grew steadily reaching 400-500 before World War I. In 1907 the school received a marble bust of its namesake Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. This was a gift for its 25th anniversary. It is the work of Lessing’s great-grandnephew a renowned sculptor of the Historicism period. Today this bust sits proudly in the school’s assembly hall.

In 1922 under Director Schmeing’s leadership the school expanded. A secondary school branch and a preparatory school were added. This preparatory school was designed to allow talented students from elementary schools to take their final exams after just twelve years of schooling. Interestingly enough from around 1927 girls were also admitted to the preparatory program. The Lessing-Gymnasium was lauded as a particularly significant school.

The Nazi era brought significant changes. Girls were excluded from the preparatory school. The school’s curriculum was altered. Its name even changed briefly to Deutsche Oberschule fur Jungen. Despite this the original buildings in Pankstrasse survived World War II relatively unscathed. Except for the sports hall. Nevertheless in 1945 the Lessing-Gymnasium relocated to its current location on Schoningstrasse.

Post-war the school experienced further evolution. It merged with other schools. It also faced challenges such as increased immigration and the need for adapting to a changing Berlin. Despite these challenges Lessing-Gymnasium has continued to thrive. It’s adapted its curriculum to meet the changing times. It offers a range of programs catering to diverse student abilities and interests. The school has embraced technology becoming a model school in Berlin’s eEducation master plan. It boasts extensive IT facilities interactive whiteboards and a virtual classroom.

The Lessing-Gymnasium continues its legacy. It is a testament to the enduring power of education. It stands as a beacon of academic excellence. It fosters a dynamic learning environment for its diverse student body. The Lessing-Gymnasium a cornerstone of Berlin’s educational landscape. It will continue to shape lives for years to come.
