Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Montreal’s Botanical Garden lies a hidden gem, the Leslie Hancock Ericaceae Garden. This tranquil sanctuary, a haven for heathers and rhododendrons, whispers tales of a man whose passion defied the harsh Canadian climate. Leslie Hancock, a horticulturist with an unwavering love for rhododendrons, believed these vibrant shrubs could flourish even in Montreal’s challenging winters. He envisioned a garden dedicated to these beauties, a vision that blossomed into reality in 1976 with the opening of the Heath Garden. The garden, later renamed in his honor in 1986, stands as a testament to his dedication. It’s Montreal Botanical Garden’s only theme garden named after an individual, a unique accolade reflecting Hancock’s profound impact. He personally designed the garden and generously donated many of the initial rhododendrons. A photograph captures the moment of its inception, Hancock shovel in hand, planting a rhododendron alongside André Champagne, then Garden’s director, and Jack Van Gemeren, the garden’s first horticulturist. The Leslie Hancock Ericaceae Garden continues to thrive, nurtured by his legacy. His great-granddaughter, Lara, carries the torch of his passion, running the family nursery in Mississauga, Ontario, where rhododendrons remain the stars. Within the garden, a special rhododendron cultivar, ‘Leslie’s Legacy’, stands as a living tribute. This hybrid, a cross between R. punctatum and R. dauricum var. album, was created by Hancock’s daughter, Marjorie. As you wander through the Leslie Hancock Ericaceae Garden, observe how conifers provide vital protection for the rhododendrons. Their shade mitigates the risk of leaf scorch during winter thaws. The conifers filter the sun’s rays, preventing the rhododendrons from “sweating” and losing moisture they cannot replenish from the frozen ground. The Leslie Hancock Ericaceae Garden is more than just a collection of plants. It’s a story of passion, perseverance, and a family’s enduring legacy within the heart of Montreal’s Botanical Garden.
