“I would have perished had I not persisted” This motto greets you at Lesley University Brattle Campus. It’s a powerful statement echoing the university’s own tenacious history. Lesley University didn’t begin as a sprawling campus. It started in 1909 in a Cambridge home. Edith Lesley a determined woman founded a school training kindergarten teachers.

The university’s early years were shaped by Froebel’s philosophy. He believed in the unique importance of each individual. This emphasis on individual growth remains a core value today. Lesley expanded. It trained elementary school teachers. It awarded degrees. It grew.

In 1998 Lesley College and the Art Institute of Boston merged. Lesley University was born. A significant moment arrived in 2008. Lesley partnered with the Episcopal Divinity School. They jointly operated the Brattle Street campus. Dormitories a dining hall and classrooms were added. Library services and administration expanded.

Then in 2018 Lesley purchased the entire Brattle Campus. This included stunning historic buildings. St John’s Memorial Chapel stands tall. Wright Hall Burnham Hall and Reed Hall tell tales of education’s past. Even 4 Berkeley Street a Victorian gem joined the fold. The campus boasts remarkable architecture. It blends the old and the new.

The acquisition of the Brattle Campus was a momentous occasion. It represented the university’s ambition. It reflected Lesley’s commitment to its students. It strengthened the university’s position in Cambridge. It is a testament to the university’s enduring spirit. That spirit of persistence embodied in its motto is visible everywhere on this beautiful campus. You see it in the stone the architecture the stories whispered in these halls. You feel it in the energy of the students who now call this place home. Lesley University Brattle Campus isn’t just a collection of buildings. It is a living legacy of perseverance and growth.
