Here before us sits the Lesender Knabe. This bronze statue captures a moment of quiet contemplation. The Lesender Knabe embodies youthful curiosity.

This sculpture is more than just a statue. It is a testament to the power of art. It enhances our everyday surroundings. Martin Irwahn created this piece in 1966.

Martin Irwahn was a Hamburg native. He was born in 1898. His life took an unexpected turn early on. As a child, he suffered an injury to his left hand. Despite this, Irwahn pursued his passion. He wanted to become a painter and sculptor.

Irwahn honed his skills meticulously. From 1911 to 1917, he studied sculpture. He learned from Johann Michael Bossard and Richard Luksch. They taught at the Hamburg School of Applied Arts. Later, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. There, Georg Wrba guided him further.

By 1920, Irwahn was a freelance artist. He joined the Hamburg Artists Association. World War II brought significant changes. Irwahn fled to Dagebüll with his student Ruth Godbersen. They married in 1946.

Irwahn co-founded the Professional Association of Visual Artists in Hamburg in 1945. He became its first chairman. His work included large-format nudes and animal figures. These were based on his drawings. He participated in group and solo exhibitions. These exhibitions took place in and around Hamburg.

In 1960, he received the Edwin Scharff Prize from the City of Hamburg. In 1965, his work was part of the “Ten Years of the Edwin Scharff Prize” exhibition at the Kunsthaus Hamburg. Martin Irwahn passed away in Hamburg on July 11, 1981.

Now let’s focus on the Lesender Knabe. The statue shows a boy absorbed in reading. He sits with his legs drawn up. He holds a large book on his knees. The statue’s style is clear and slightly simplified. The focus is on the boy’s concentration.
