Have you ever noticed a giant leopard spot on the ceiling of the Houston Intercontinental Airport? If not, you might have missed “Leopard Sky,” a dazzling architectural installation that once graced the terminal. Sheila Klein, the artist behind this masterpiece, transformed the roadway ceiling into a captivating leopard print. Fifty-five aluminum panels were meticulously cut into spots, painted black, and studded with parking lot safety mirrors and light fixtures. These shiny accents, along with the panels, created the illusion of luminous clouds suspended in the air. The piece was originally designed to be temporary, but its popularity quickly soared, making it a beloved landmark for over 18 years. Unfortunately, “Leopard Sky” was sadly removed in 2020 to make way for major renovations. Despite its absence, the memory of this unique installation remains in the minds of many travelers who were fortunate enough to witness its brilliance. So next time you’re at IAH, maybe you can catch a glimpse of the leopard’s playful spirit in the air!
