Lenzie Union Parish Church began its story in 1873. It was founded as Lenzie Union Church. This name anticipated the union between the United Presbyterians and the Free Church. That union happened in 1900. It then became Lenzie United Free Church.
The church served a growing residential area. Its location near a railway station attracted commuters. The original building was a simple Gothic Revival design. It featured windows of plate tracery.
As membership increased, the congregation decided to expand in 1906. They added a north aisle or transept. James Craig Annan played a key role in selecting an architect. He was a Glasgow photographer. He was also a Lenzie resident.
Honeyman, Keppie and Mackintosh were chosen for the job. John Keppie led the project. He had previously worked for Campbell Douglas and Sellars. They were the original church architects.
