“A park named after a revolutionary?” Standing here at Lenin Park, you might wonder about the connection between Vietnam and Vladimir Lenin. Let’s unravel the story of this green space. It has witnessed Hanoi’s transformations. Lenin Park wasn’t always named as such.
Once upon a time, this park was Elephant Lake. Soldiers bathed elephants here. Between 1894 and 1897, the French colonial government decided to fill the lake. A park emerged called Robin Flower Garden. Locals cheekily nicknamed it “Farming Scenery Flower Garden”. This was because of a statue of a farmer plowing with a water buffalo.
In 1945, change swept through Hanoi. The mayor, Trần Văn Lai, removed French monuments. Robin Flower Garden became Chi Lăng Flower Garden. It honored the Vietnamese victory in the Battle of Chi Lăng. This name stuck even after the Communist Party took over Hanoi.
Fast forward to 1982. The government decided to erect a Lenin monument here in Chi Lăng Flower Garden. The Soviet Union assisted in its creation. In 1985, the 5.2-meter-tall bronze statue was revealed.
Then, in 2003, Chi Lăng Flower Garden was officially renamed Lenin Park. Interestingly, another park, Thong Nhat Park, was briefly known as Lenin Park from 1980 to 2003. After October 7, 2003, Thong Nhat Park reverted to its original name. This makes our Lenin Park the true and only Lenin Park today.
Today, Lenin Park remains a popular spot. Locals gather here for Tai Chi and aerobics in the morning. Children fill the playground in the evening. Badminton players and soccer teams practice here too.
The Lenin statue stands amidst palm trees. It is a reminder of the USSR’s influence on world politics. It also shows its support for revolutionary movements. Including Vietnam.
