A child, bathed in the soft glow of streetlights, holds a luminous circle and line. This, my friends, is L’enfant au Modulor – Het kind met de Modulor. L’enfant au Modulor stands here in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, a testament to art’s power to uplift and inspire. Created by the French sculptor Hervé Paraponaris, this 2021 sculpture is part of the 101e% project. The project aims to bring art to social housing districts, making it accessible to everyone. L’enfant au Modulor isn’t your typical historical figure immortalized in bronze. It’s a contemporary child, reflecting the youth of today. Paraponaris breaks away from traditional commemorative statues. He gives the public space back to its inhabitants, symbolized by this child. L’enfant au Modulor holds a luminous circle and line. These represent the balance between journey and territory, movement and origin. They also symbolize family lineage and the circle of friends. The artwork embodies a multifaceted, open identity. Originally, the circle and line were even more striking. They were made of a bright, luminous material. Sadly, due to vandalism, they were replaced with plain metal in 2021 or 2022. It’s a shame that such acts of disrespect can diminish the beauty of public art. But L’enfant au Modulor still stands. It reminds us of the importance of art in our lives and the power of community. L’enfant au Modulor is more than just a sculpture. It’s a symbol of hope and connection in a sometimes fragmented world.
