Did you know the Lena Horne Theatre wasn’t always called that? Standing before this magnificent building on West 47th Street you’re looking at a piece of Broadway history. The Lena Horne Theatre opened its doors in 1926. It wasn’t always the glamorous venue we see today. It began life as the Mansfield Theatre named for the celebrated British actor Richard Mansfield.

The Mansfield Theatre initially struggled. Many of its early productions were short-lived flops. It wasn’t until 1930 that a production named The Green Pastures brought the theatre its first major success. Featuring an all-Black cast this Pulitzer Prize-winning play defied expectations and proved to be a landmark achievement. The success was short-lived however. The theatre faced challenges during the Great Depression. It even served as a television studio for CBS for a period known as Studio 59.

This incredible space hosted various productions. It housed panel shows like I’ve Got a Secret and What’s My Line? After a period away from live theatre the theatre reopened in 1960. It was renamed the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in honor of the longtime New York Times theatre critic. This made it the first Broadway theatre named for a theatre critic.

The Brooks Atkinson Theatre continued its rich legacy. Hosting renowned productions and celebrated performers. Stars such as Glenn Close and Marisa Tomei graced its stage. Its intimate atmosphere provided an incredible setting for both plays and musicals. It even saw the success of the musical Grease.

Then in 2000 a major renovation transformed the theatre once more. The original chandelier was restored and the seating capacity was increased to 1069. The theatre’s remarkable past was preserved. New life was breathed into this iconic space.

Finally in 2022 a significant moment arrived. The theatre was renamed once again. This time it was rededicated as the Lena Horne Theatre. A fitting tribute to the legendary singer actress and civil rights activist. The Lena Horne Theatre stands as a testament to the enduring power of theatre. It represents the evolution of Broadway and its commitment to celebrating diverse voices.
