The old church was moved from its original location. It served as a community meeting hall. Then it became a private residence. Today it houses a museum. Its exhibits recall Lemon Grove’s past. It was once a small agricultural town. There were citrus orchards and packing houses. The town had a general store. It was known for having the “Best Climate on Earth.”

Anton Sonka led Lemon Grove’s growth between 1908 and the 1950s. He was the patriarch of the Sonka family. His headstone was rescued by Lemon Grove Historical Society members. It had been dumped at Mt. Hope Cemetery for mass burial. The headstone was brought to The Parsonage Museum in 2000. It was unveiled on this permanent site in 2004.

The Sonka Brothers General Store stood near the center of town for decades. You can still see the Lemon Grove History Mural. It’s painted on the south side of the historic Sonka Brothers General Store building.

The Lemon Grove Historical Society’s digital collection includes texts from the 1940s to the 1990s. These texts include issues of the Lemon Grove Review newspapers. They document life in Lemon Grove and its surrounding communities.

The Lemon Grove Historical Society also has records and recordings of local history forums held in Lemon Grove in 1978. Topics covered include water rights, Spanish and Mexican land grants, Japanese in San Diego, and Lemon Grove churches. One item is Donald Louis Heyser’s autobiography. He discusses life in Lemon Grove from 1918 to 1973.
