Attending Brandeis University is more than just academics. It includes nurturing the youngest minds at the Lemberg Children’s Center. This center isn’t just a daycare. It’s a vibrant hub of early education and research.

The Lemberg Children’s Center has a rich history. Brandeis University faculty, staff, and students founded it. They aimed to provide top-notch childcare and education. Their goal was to advance early care and education. In 1975, the center merged with the psychology department’s child study center. Abraham Maslow, a renowned professor and psychiatrist, started this study center. The Lemberg Children’s Center continues to study the best practices in education and life-span development.

In 2014, the Lemberg Children’s Center moved into a state-of-the-art facility. This new space allowed for expanded programs. It also serves as a practicum site. Brandeis University students studying education, child development, environmental studies, neuroscience, music, theater, and political science benefit from this.

The Lemberg Children’s Center has six classrooms. Two are for infants. Two are for toddlers. And two are for preschoolers. The center is known for its low adult-to-child ratios. This ensures each child receives ample attention. On staff consultants provide support for occupational therapy, speech, communication, and other developmental needs. There are also environmental education experts.

Classroom routines are packed with activities. Social-emotional learning and community building are key. The center celebrates human diversity and fosters a love for literature. Arts, STEM, and nature also feature prominently. Children learn to work collaboratively. Over 40% of the children speak a language other than English at home adding to the diversity. The center operates year-round. It is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM.

The Lemberg Children’s Center is more than just childcare. It is also the Boston Regional Training Center for the American Psychological Association’s ACT Raising Safe Kids Program. This program focuses on parent education and violence prevention.

The Lemberg Children’s Center aims to raise children with environmental awareness. They want to instill habits for sustainable living. Through interdisciplinary environmental education children recognize the value of the life around them. This includes hands-on science, reading, and the arts.

The Firefly Scientists’ Community Garden and Playground is a creative space. Children and partners explore nature and food production. They also engage with the community. Educational programs involve local schools, camps, and international visitors. Brandeis University student clubs also participate. These interactions build social, emotional, and intellectual connections. They foster leadership skills and community service values. Meaningful friendships are made.

The Lemberg Children’s Center is an integral part of Brandeis University. It is a place where children play, grow, and learn. It prepares them for a bright future. It exemplifies Brandeis’ commitment to the wider Waltham community. The Lemberg Children’s Center has been nurturing young minds for over 40 years. It will continue to do so for many years to come.
