Did you ever wonder how beekeepers learn their craft? Here at the Lehrbienenstand in Meersburg-Baitenhausen, the secrets of beekeeping are revealed. The Lehrbienenstand, which translates to “teaching apiary,” isn’t just a collection of hives. It’s a living classroom, a hub for beekeeping education, and a testament to the dedication of local beekeepers. Established in the scenic landscapes surrounding Meersburg, the Lehrbienenstand has a rich history, first mentioned in 1952. Its current location, near a tranquil forest edge, was gifted by the Margrave of Baden in 1989. It’s jointly run by the Markdorf and Überlingen beekeeper associations, a partnership that brings together around 300 members caring for approximately 1,700 bee colonies. The Lehrbienenstand is a center for learning and community. Beekeepers, visitor groups, and school children come to explore the world of bees. Experienced beekeepers lead training sessions. The site also boasts a vibrant “Blütenpfad,” a flower path designed to showcase the plants that bees rely on for pollen and nectar. The path, established in 2008, winds through a meadow adjacent to the apiary, buzzing with activity from June to September. Inside, a dedicated training room provides a space for aspiring beekeepers to learn the trade. This room, equipped with 60 seats, is where beekeepers have been trained in a two-year cycle, producing over 250 new beekeepers since 2001. History comes alive at the Lehrbienenstand through a display of historical beekeeping equipment and observation hives. These displays offer a glimpse into the past and help visitors understand the evolution of beekeeping practices. The Lehrbienenstand has thrived thanks to the support of these local beekeeping associations. It even became its own independent association in 2022. The associations ensure its continued operation. The Lehrbienenstand truly stands as a hive of activity. It’s a blend of history, education, and community spirit. It showcases the importance of beekeeping in the region.
