Beneath the generous gaze of Dr. Lee Shau Kee’s legacy, stands the Lee Shau Kee Humanities Hall. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to a man who believed in the power of education. The Lee Shau Kee Humanities Hall embodies the spirit of its namesake. Dr. Lee, a prominent figure in the Greater China Region, made his mark not just in business, but in philanthropy. He viewed education as an investment with immeasurable returns, a belief etched into the very foundation of this hall. Dr. Lee’s story began in Shunde City, Guangdong Province, in 1929. He worked in the family goldsmith and money exchange business from a young age. Arriving in Hong Kong in his late teens, he navigated various businesses before establishing himself in the property market in 1958. His business acumen led to the founding of Henderson Development Limited in 1973. This expanded substantially throughout Hong Kong and mainland China. Dr. Lee’s foresight in investing in mainland China during the 1980s solidified his position as a leading real estate tycoon. But his wealth came with a sense of responsibility. Dr. Lee became a respected philanthropist, contributing billions of dollars to educational institutions globally. The Lee Shau Kee Foundation stands as a beacon of his commitment. It offers scholarships and donations to schools and universities worldwide. In Hong Kong alone, Dr. Lee generously donated to all nine universities. His support for education extended to establishing the first MBA program in Hong Kong at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1977. He also founded the Lee Shau Kee Scholarship in 1979, sponsoring Hong Kong students to study at Oxford University. The Lee Shau Kee Humanities Hall is a physical representation of this lifelong commitment. It’s a place where minds meet, where ideas flourish, and where future generations are empowered by knowledge. This is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living legacy, a testament to the vision of one man who understood that investing in education is investing in the future.
