Remember Louise Brooks. She starred with Francis Lederer in Pandora’s Box. Right here stand the Lederer Stables. They whisper tales of Hollywood glamour and Canoga Park history.
Francis Lederer built these stables in 1936. He was a Czech-born actor. He later became the Honorary Mayor of Canoga Park. Lederer owned a 300-acre ranch. These stables were part of it.
Lederer designed the stables in Mission Revival style. He worked with artisan builder John R. Litke. The stables housed Lederer’s horses. His wife Marion loved her horse Gypsy.
In the mid-1960s Sherman Way was extended. It cut through Lederer’s property. Marion Lederer and friends transformed the stables. They turned it into the Canoga Mission Gallery. It became a non-profit cultural center. The city declared it a historic landmark in 1974. It is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 135.
For 27 years the Galeanas managed the gallery. In 2001 Jill Milligan’s Hidden Chateau and Gardens took over. It is an antique shop. It hosts parties, weddings, teas and corporate events.
Lederer lived to be 100 years old. He died in 2000. He and Marion moved to Palm Springs. Their home was damaged in the Northridge earthquake. The Lederer Stables stand as a reminder. They connect us to Canoga Park’s past. They link us to Francis Lederer’s legacy. The stables embody a blend of history, art and community spirit.
